"Rock,
Paper, Scissors"
By Arlene Tai
Growing up as identical twins, [Ada
Tai/Arlene Tai]
we are frequently asked many intriguing questions. Of late,
these inquiries have revolved around our dating lives. In answering
these questions, we found that recanting our past experiences in
the dating arena led to humorous reactions, which eventually led
to the birth of our short.
With no prior filmmaking experience, production was a challenge
of trial by fire for both of us. We learned everything about filmmaking
in less than two weeks. The filmmaking process is not only challenging
and stressful, but also expensive! In retrospect, we would have
allocated more money for food. Never underestimate the eating
capacity of a 35 men crew hungry and tired.
A comical incident happened on the first and only exterior
night scene shot on the driveway of a friend's home. Unbeknownst
to us, he happens to live right smack in the middle of the heavily
trafficked Christmas Lane in Pasadena. During filming, cars continuously
passed by and honked. The consistent honking noise frustrated our
Sound person and Director. We still have no idea how we managed
to film this scene. This was just one of the many challenging moments
of our filmmaking experience.
With all of the peaks and valleys we endured, the completion
of our film in less than six months was a triumph for two novice
filmmakers. We are thrilled to have our first production premiering
at the Directors' Guild of America in Los Angeles, California. Our
short, "Rock, Paper, Scissors," will be premiering at the Asian
American Pacific Film and Video Festival in May 2000.
