32
year old Jum Sook Kim kept her invitation to compete at the Winter
X-Games in tribute to her world ranked ice climbing husband Seoung
Chul Choi who tragically died in an avalanche in the Himalayas a
few months ago. Jum ascended the 60 foot ice wall laden with treacherous
obstacles such as giant icicles, chandeliers and overhangs. A time-limited
opportunity, Jum made it to the top with only 17 seconds to spare.
Quite an achievement considering that not one of the women competitors
reached the top at last year's Winter X-Games. Jum is a world ranked
competitor. She placed 1st in speed at the 1997 Korean Ice Climbing
Championship and has previously won in major Asian competitions.
One of her greatest accomplishments was in Yosemite National Park,
climbing Aurora, a 2,500 foot route on El Capitan in 1997. She would
like her next big project to be to climb the Dru in the French Alps.
Asianconnections team travelled on the same plane in Colorado with
Jum, fellow competitor 1998 Silver Medalist ice climber Chung Seung
Kwon, who finished sixth this year, and her coach Sang - Tae Cho,
President of the Asian Council for Competition Climbing.
