"The Coming of Morning"
by Eunice Majam
As I parked my car at work this morning, the green grass on the lawn in front of me
caught my attention. On the other side of the lawn is Exposition Boulevard. The road is not busy that early, only one or two cars every now and then. I looked across that lawn
and was mesmerized by the view: grass swaying in the soft sunlight that trickled through the leaves of the maple trees surrounding the lawn. It seemed to be dancing to a music
only it can hear. Usually there are so many things in my mind at the start of each day that I do not notice these things, but this morning was different. While I was sitting in my
car and watching the swaying grass, I felt inner peace. I sat there for a few minutes and tried to make the moment linger before I head on to a busy day.
When I decided to take my lunch around 1:00 p.m., I thought about eating in my car
so I can breath fresh air. I also thought about how nice it would be to watch nature, and maybe recollect that peaceful feeling I had this morning. I was surprised when I was
walking towards my car that, amidst the commotion of the busy street on the other side of the lawn, the grass stayed still. It did not sway like it did this morning. "Weird," I
thought. Just this morning when I parked my car the grass was swaying so much as if rejoicing and doing a dance. Now everything stood still even with the commotion of cars
driving by. "What made the difference? Shouldn't the grass be swaying more now because of the commotion on the road?" The grass stood still and silent. It seemed to be
waiting for something. I realized then that it was the morning breeze that made the difference. That fresh breeze that accompanies the sun as it slowly rises in the morning
made the grass dance to a music we humans are incapable of hearing. The grass waits in silence for the morning breeze to take the lead in the dance, but that afternoon the
breeze was no where to be found. There was only the noise and the commotion of a busy street. "It will be a long wait for that peaceful morning," I thought.
Just like the grass, we do a lot of "waiting for the morning." We wait because the
morning refreshes us and brings new promises. To the grass, the morning signals the coming of the cool and refreshing breeze. To us, the morning symbolizes the coming of
things we delight in or desire. We wait for that right person to come, that vacation we long planned for, that long-awaited promotion, that paycheck to arrive, that e-mail or letter
or call from a friend, that problem to be solved, or sometimes just for a tedious day to end. We go through the night wondering if that morning, one that refreshes us and brings new promises, will ever come.
I learned something good from my observations today: that however long the night
seems to be, there's always an end to it because the morning never ceases to arrive. What I learned is actually common knowledge, but what this analogy symbolizes in our
lives is sometimes hard to understand especially when we go through challenging times.
It is now 2:00 p.m. Pretty soon it will be dark and we'll go through another night. But
the morning will soon come. Yes, it will come. -EM
