Tuen Ng (Dragon Boat) Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival occurs on the fifth day
of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.
On this day, boats in the shape of a dragon, filled
with rowers rowing to the beat of a drum, are raced
in the local rivers. These races traditionally started
as efforts to rescue the ancient Chinese hero Chu
Yuan, the patriotic poet who drown on the fifth
day of the fifth month in 277 BC.
The meal served on this day consists of sticky rice
wrapped in river leaves (tzungtzu) and soup dumplings
(tang yuan). These traditional dishes were meant
to be thrown into the river for the fish to eat
instead of Chu Yuan, but have since become family
favorites. |

Chung Yeung Festival
The Chung Yeung Festival is a Hong Kong holiday
to celebrate the family ancestors. The festival
falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the
Chinese lunar calendar. The holiday is said to have
been started by an ancient family who went for a
walk up a hill. When the family returned, they found
all their farm animals had died and concluded that
they had been saved from death because they were
on higher ground. Thus the festival is celebrated
by families taking hikes up the local hills.
