Hong
Kong Movie Superstar Andy
Lau
Makes
First North American Film Festival Appearance at
The 23rd Asian
American International Film Festival
New
York, NY -- Summer 2000
Asian CineVision (ACV) is proud to present Hong Kong movie superstar
Andy Lau in his first North American film festival appearance at the
23rd Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF). Lau will
be on hand to introduce the 23rd AAIFF's Opening Night Film, "Running
Out of Time," for which he won this year's Hong Kong equivalent of
the Academy Award for Best Actor. Following in the footsteps of Hong
Kong crossovers Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-Fat and Jet Li, Lau is seeking
film projects for his American movie debut.
Andy Lau has been one of Asia's biggest stars for over 15
years. His career began in 1981 when he enrolled in the Artist Training
Program at Hong Kong's largest television network, TVB. After graduating,
he was immediately recruited by the station and went on to act in
fifteen TV series, which earned him instant stardom in Hong Kong,
Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan.
In the mid-80s, Lau began appearing in feature films, often
co-starring alongside the likes of Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-Fat and
Sammo Hung. In 1988, he earned international recognition and acclaim
for his starring role as a smalltime gangster in Wong Kar Wai's
directorial debut, "As Tears Go By." The movie was followed by a
string of hit movies in a wide range of genres, many of which cast
him as the "good hearted gangster," his most celebrated role.
After starring in the enormously successful 1990 movie "A
Moment of Romance," Andy Lau cemented his position as one of Hong
Kong and Asia's biggest box office attractions. The following year,
he starred in over 10 movies, which were all box office smashes.
To date, Lau has starred in 99 movies and will begin filming his
100th this summer.
