Reflection on Change
Transition
from College student to young professional
by
Eunice Majam
The changes in our lives, whether we consider them
to be good or bad, are happening for a purpose. We become more mature
in dealing with these changes. As we welcome change, we are one
step closer to who we want to be and where we want to be. Change
is always equated with the word new. When we experience change,
we experience something new. Sometimes that something new, when
we just behold it with our eyes and not with our hands, can be very
appealing. Once we grasp it in our hands though, that something
new becomes less fascinating that we expect. Nevertheless we take
it upon ourselves to face it and hope that something good will come
out of the change.
One evening I was reading chapter eleven of the
book The Bridge Across Forever by Richard Bach. The first
paragraph caught my attention. It was a short paragraph with only
thirty-nine words; those few words had an impact on me. It made
me reflect for a moment about where I am headed with my life and
what I am doing to get there. It has been four months now since
I graduated from college. Since then, some things has changed.
One of the biggest change in my life is moving
away from my family and living by myself. Surviving on my own has
been challenging. The challenge is more on the emotional aspect
than anything else. As a young, single person who is away from her
family for the first time, I struggle to adjust to my new environment
and my new life without the presence of the ones who are dear to
me. My family does not live too far, only 180 miles from where I
live. For some people this distance is probably nothing, but to
me it seems too far especially after an arduous day. Coming from
a very closely-knit and loving family, I have always turned to my
mom, dad, and brother for encouraging words after a frustrating
day at work or school. For the past 24 years, my consolation every
time I go through a difficult day is that, I will see my family
once I get home.
Now that I am done with school, at least for my
bachelor's degree, I'm undergoing a lot of changes as a neophyte
in the professional world. Some of these changes I consider to be
great like becoming more independent (in the full sense of the word).
Some changes I consider to be not so pleasant like being new to
a place and my nearest relative is three hours away. I went beyond
my comfort zone when I decided to face these changes head on. They
were inevitable anyway. I can say that most of the changes I'm experiencing
are ones that I brought upon myself because I have goals that I
want to accomplish and heights I want to climb. Richard Bach in
his book The Bridge Across Forever stated that, "There are
no mistakes. The events we bring upon ourselves, no matter how unpleasant,
are necessary in order to learn what we need to learn; whatever
steps we take, they're necessary in order to reach the places we've
chosen to go." Like Richard Bach, I look at these changes as stepping
stones that will propel me to the road of success.
