Playwright David Henry Hwang and
honoree Ming Cho Lee. Ming Cho Lee was born in Shanghai, China and
is acclaimed as both a set designer and a water colorist. He grew
up in Shanghai and attended Occidental College in Los Angeles. Ming
Cho served a five-year apprenticeship with Jo Mielziner, and beginning
in 1958, he began making a name for himself with his imaginative
sets for scores of productions on and off Broadway, for operas and
for dance. For many years, he was the principal designer for the
New York Shakespeare Festival. With numerous professional accolades
under his belt, he has also been named Man of the Year by the Chinese
American Planning Council in New York City and received the Mayor's
Award for Arts and Culture in New York City. David cited Ming as
a personal role model who paved the way for Asian Americans in the
theater.
