A
Golden Weekend to Remember
By
Nancy Bui
After the awards ended, I departed from the AsianConnections
team and decided to mill around in hopes of talking to people that
I hadn't been able to catch before. It looked like the Palace was
emptying fairly quickly -- the clue that my work was done. But a
little voice inside me said I should stick around for one moment
more. And guess what? By pure chance, I met Robin Shou.
When I met him, I honestly didn't know who he was, but since
people were clambering around him, I figured I should find out who
this attractive person was. I began to talk to him, and I
discovered that not only is he a great actor, he starred in Mortal
Kombat 1 and 2 as the fearless Liu Kang and in Beverly
Hills Ninja with Chris Farley, I realized that he was extremely
intelligent, remarkably down to earth, and an awesome role model.
People were leaving the Palace at a steady rate, and I felt it was
time to leave. I was planning to go to the official after-party that
was being hosted by Synergy Productions at Club NV. Synergy Productions
is one of the Bay Area's best party promotions groups, so I knew the
party was going to be a blast.
I was about to say my good byes to Robin to leave for party,
and it turned out that Robin didn't know where it was, so he suggested
that we go together and try to find where it was. I ended up driving
Robin to the party by following the Mountain Brothers in their limo
(since I have absolutely no sense of direction)!
I was completely embarrassed driving him in my little silver
Honda Civic, not for the reason that it's a total college student
car, but for the fact that my car was an extreme mess! You see,
I didn't have directions to the Palace of Fine Arts, and I was running
late as it was, so I ended fixing my hair in the car, while trying
to call my friends to help me find my way.
My car was in complete disarray from my hurried preparation
and also from my previous five hour drive to San Francisco. I had
curlers in the front seat, along with my mess in the back, so I
frantically ran around my car, trying to make some semblance of
the mess so he could at least sit down. If I had any idea
that I would have a star in my car, I would have gotten it detailed!
He wasn't even fazed by my mess, and laughed it off, he was very
appreciative that I would take him to the party.
At the party, we found Lou Diamond Phillips, Geddy Wantanbe
(ER and Revenge of the Nerds), Ming-Na Wen and her husband Eric
Zee, Dante Brosco (Fakin' the Funk with Tatyana Ali), Phillip Rhee
(Best of the Best), Amy Hill (All American Girl), and others. I
spent the night socializing and chatting with them and just plain
having fun!
It was such an awesome experience being able to talk to all
of them in such a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Throughout the night,
I kept thinking to my self "I can't believe I'm talking to these
people! They have been my idols since I was in grade school!" The
party was in full rage, and all the stars were having a great time
laughing, talking, telling stories, I didn't know what to do, but
sit, and soak in the experience. But I'm such a dancer, and I can't
stand when people mill around, so I managed to convince Steve of
the Mountain Brothers and Robin Shou to dance. It was great dancing
and I think I helped them relax and have fun after such a long day.
