May 8, 2002 AC's founder, Mike Kai is finishing his first year in college and thought we'd share this personal note. [We suspect that this bashful kid will be pretty embarassed as he discovers that we posted these personal photos of him, but we are mightly proud of him!] Mike was honored as one of two recipients of the Joseph W. Naturale Cup yesterday by the Master and Dean of his undergraduate residential college at Yale. The award is bestowed annually to the freshman who best exemplifies the spirit of his enthusiastic participation in all areas of College life." Mike's name is engraved on the silver cup for 2002. Congrats, Mike! He has managed to keep his grades up while enjoying many of the activities at Yale. This spring he was involved with the Yale Entrepreneurs Society business plan competition helping to coordinate venture capitalists to judge the annual competition which offered $100,000 in awards. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed fly fishing as a member of the Yale Anglers Society. Having grown up on an Arizona ranch, he also enjoyed doing target practise with clay pigeons as a member of the Yale Skeet and Trap Club. Lately, he and fellow students with the Yale Climbing Club have been scaling buildings on campus a la Spider-Man. Mike also managed to design and build from parts ordered over the Internet an outdoor hot tub for eight during the freezing winter right outside his dorm room. During a heat wave, he set up a refreshing "slip-n-slide" in the middle of campus. He continues supervising the overall direction of all of our projects. As a columnist at AsianConnections.com and StudioLA.com he interviewed a classmate who was a costar in the movie The Fast and the Furious. He also launched a new startup with a fellow classmate called CollegeEntrance.com, a service to help students get into college. He also got to catch up with San Francisco's Mayor Willie Brown, who was a guest at Yale. It was quite a memorable moment since Mayor Brown inaugurated AsianConnections.com with Mike during a trade and friendship mission to China in 1998. Hey Mike, rock on! Cheers from the AC Team. |
